What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?
I love the energy and anticipation that goes into weddings. There isn't another day so thought out and planned. There isn't another day that all the loved ones of couples will be in the same room. Out of all of life's celebrations, this happy day is the most inclusive and shared with others. It's a proud moment for parents and grandparents as they see their legacy grow. Parties of this scale are once in a lifetime for most people to host. Documenting the people, the passing moments and the intricate details within a few hours is a huge responsibility. All while making people look flattering and comfortable in front of a camera. My favorite part of weddings is when I can match the perfect composition, light, and emotion.
What led you to the wedding industry, specifically?
Cake, hugs, a day of gigantic laughs and a big party.... psssh I'm in! I always knew I wanted to be a photographer or artist of some sort. I studied photojournalism in school, I took a break and traveled for a bit, when I made my way back to Minnesota I went back to school for digital photography. During this time is when I assisted other photographers. Wedding photography was where I felt most comfortable. I'm from a huge Catholic family with more than fifty first cousins. One after another, they trusted me to photograph their weddings.
What are your favorite wedding trends right now?
In regards to photography, I love that there are so many different styles of edits. It allows people to find the type they are looking for. As far as trends at the wedding day, I love how couples have invited good friends to be their officiants. They know the couple well and always include a good story about the couple. Pinterest has taken weddings to a new level over the last couple years. I can follow clients boards and see their inspirations leading up to the wedding day. It provides tons of inspiration for over the top details. I also believe Pinterest has given couples a more heightened awareness of gorgeous and visually stimulating photography providing a greater value to having a professional photographer.
Tell us about your most memorable and fun wedding/event.
Oh gosh, I have so many memorable weddings! Recently, I photographed a wedding at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The day started out with dinosaur tattoos, we took photos with astronauts, science googles, dinosaurs and the dance floor was packed with crazy dancing all night.
What makes you unique from other wedding photographers?
There are so many talented wedding photographers! My experience in the number of years, as well as the number of weddings I have photographed, set me a part of other photographers. I have photographed hundreds of weddings that allow me to have an arsenal of ways to handle different situations that come up on wedding days. I have learned to ask lots of questions to ensure the wedding day is set up be the most successful for the couple, other vendors and the photos. We have one shot at this day, it is best to be prepared.
Can you tell us about your packages and price point?
I offer a few standard packages starting from $2995 to $5895. Most people haven't shopped for wedding photography before. I'm happy to work with couples to create the package they need whether it is just four hours of coverage or full day. Engagement session, second photographer, and custom albums are all available.
Tell us one thing we might not otherwise know about you.
I used to be a paid fishing guide. Okay, that is a little stretch, I worked at Hiawatha Beach Resort on Leech Lake for seven years growing up. I would do weekly kids activities. One day a week, I took the kids out on a fishing trip. I loved growing up on the lake and seeing families vacation year after year!
