The Ongoing Debate: DJ or iPod Wedding?!

So... you're planning a wedding. You'll likely make lots of decisions and you'll also likely be on a budget. You'll have to decide where to splurge - and well - where not to splurge. I hear this question all the time: "Should we hire a DJ or just save money and have an iPod wedding?" When I was planning my own wedding, I went back on forth on this for months. Like anything when it comes to weddings, there are pros and cons to each.

Let's start with DJ's. A DJ will make your wedding reception come to life - your guests are almost guaranteed to get up and dance! Not to mention, a DJ will have a huge selection of music at their fingertips and can "read" the crowd in order to know what song needs to be played next. Another advantage is that they can also act as a MC to announce your cake cutting, bouquet/garter toss, and other events throughout the evening. In short, they're there to make the party happen!

iPod Wedding. There's nothing wrong with having an iPod wedding! When I was planning my own wedding, I actually considered this because I am very type A personality and wanted to make sure the only music playing was the music from my playlist. This option, in most cases, is essentially free compared to a DJ - but there just came one concern. Who would MC the events throughout the evening (definitely not me!) and how would I ever build up enough songs to create my perfect playlist (I purchase music on iTunes so I just knew the $1.29 per song would add up quick!)

For my wedding, I ended up going the DJ route. It was $1200 compared to the $700 fee to have speakers/audio equipment hooked up just for an iPod wedding. Not to mention, I would have had to purchase a bunch of songs myself - so - a DJ ended up being the better value for me. Also, I didn't want to have to be the MC at my own wedding and I didn't want to rely on any of my friends or family to have to play that role either - so - hiring a DJ ended up being one of the best decisions I've ever made.
