Vendor Spotlight: Chowgirls Killer Catering
When it comes to your wedding or event, one of the most important vendors you need to book is a caterer. And not just any caterer, an outstanding caterer! A caterer that not only has delicious food, but also excellent service. That’s where Chowgirls Killer Catering based in the Twin Cities comes in. We’ve worked with them numerous times and have always had a wonderful experience. Their food is to die for and their service is top-notch making them one of the best caterers in town. We did a little Q&A session with them to find out more!
What are some of the most important things for couples to keep in mind when choosing a caterer?
When choosing a caterer, sit down with your partner and come up with a list of deal-breakers for food and service. What are the most important things to you about your wedding day? Think about past weddings and events you’ve been to. What stands out? What did you love? What do you want to make sure of? Maybe it’s speed of service, having a feeling of plenty, food for all dietary restrictions, or having your wedding stand out to guests as unique. Pin pointing your top priorities helps us put together the perfect menu for you from the get-go.
Tell us about the process of choosing and finalizing a wedding menu.
We make thoughtful hospitality a priority. Each couple that comes to us has their own unique story and we love creating a menu that reflects this. Some couples have thought of every detail by the time they contact us while others only know they’re engaged to the love of their life. Our Event Specialists love the opportunity to dig into past experiences, favorite gatherings, and family recipes to create a customized proposal for each couple. If it’s not on our menu, our chefs will custom make it. If it’s something out of our chefs' realm of expertise, our Event Specialists will work with local purveyors to coordinate those items for you. Next is the tasting. We offer chef’s choice and custom tastings for couples and family, friends, or wedding planners to come in and try our food. After this, couples can continue to fine tune the details of their wedding menu up to two weeks before their wedding date.
What makes you unique from other caterers?
Chowgirls Killer Catering is a women-owned, award-winning Minneapolis catering company and we pride ourselves in leading the way in seasonal fare, standout experiences, and sustainable solutions. We use locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, and opt for organic products whenever possible. Our ingredients, sourced from 51 main local farms and other purveyors, travel an average of 37.5 miles to get to our kitchen.
We are very dedicated to diverting as much waste from landfills and incineration as possible. Through composting, recycling, donating leftovers to a food rescue program, participating in a special plastic recycling program, and serving on reusable platters and equipment, Chowgirls is constantly moving closer to our goal of zero waste. On average, 85% of our byproducts are composted or recycled. We are proud to lead the way in food rescue by sharing extra food with hungry families in our communities through food donation programs. We nurture the sustainability of our staff by creating a safe, sane, and social work place. We offer living wages to all employees.
We are committed to making Chowgirls a place people want to work with safe work policies, fun social programs, and sane working hours. We prioritize making mindful business decisions to craft quality food with respect for people and the planet.
What catering trends are you seeing at the moment?
Stations
Chef stations are big these days and we love them! It’s a great way for guests to be able to customize their own dining experience from the food on their plate to the time that they eat it. The best part, there’s NO WAIT since stations can be open for a couple hours and guests can help themselves as they choose. It’s also a perfect option for when you can’t decide what you want- you can have everything! Fancy flank steak carved to order by a chef, cheese and charcuterie, and a mac and cheese bar absolutely all go together.
Throwback to proper etiquette
There are so few opportunities to get really dressed up and sit down to a formal dinner with an overwhelmingly fun amount of forks these days. Couples are using their wedding as a chance to throw a proper party. Sit down dinners, multiple courses, champagne pours, floor length dresses, and black ties. Talk about great way to kick off the rest of your lives in style.
Pets in Weddings
Our special attention to details isn’t exclusively in regard to humans. We’re seeing more and more couples including their pet in their wedding. Canine ring bearers, puppy cake toppers, and dogs sitting at the head table are becoming common and we’ve had a few couples reach out to us about dog treats as a party favor at their wedding. Our chefs have enjoyed expanding their horizons to taste testers of other species.
Anything else you'd like to share with us?
We’re a group of creative, passionate people who love different ideas, intricate menus and embrace the challenge of creating an event that is unique and special for each couple that comes our way. We focus on thoughtful hospitality from the initial planning process to setting the plate in front of each guest. Our staff is as authentic and approachable as our food and can bring you formality while feeling like family.
